The Kiss was painted by the Austrian Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt between 1907 and 1908. He used oil paint applied with layers of gold leaf to create a modern, yet evocative appearance. Klimt used gold leaf in the painting to recall medieval gold ground paintings and illuminated manuscripts. In this masterpiece, he shows a couple that’s locked in intimacy, while the rest of the painting dissolves into a shimmering, extravagant flat pattern.
